One of the first skills in communicating and relating to the environment is the awareness of different objects. This concept can include people as well. Objects that are common to the environment of the student are the preferred materials. Pointing with a finger is not a critical aspect. Any form of communication such as eye gaze, head pointing, or even directed body movement can be used to serve as an action tohead pointing, or even directed body movement can be used to serve as an action toidentify the student's selection. An understanding of the item's purpose or use is not a significant act in this lesson. The act of identifying and communicating that identification has occurred is the expected outcome.
