Educational work with schools
The emphasis on experience and personal meaning-making in the museum community
raises serious issues for specialized educational work with school children. On
the whole, formal education in the UK and the United States most recently has
moved in the direction of an emphasis on the development of educational “standards,”
increased use of testing for outcomes, and linking funding to various measures
of “success” and “failure.” The adoption of a national curriculum in the UK
in 1989 quickly led to a series of publications proposing ways in which museums
could support the curriculum.
