The Karabair
This is the horse breed that excels in "kok-par". Created also in neighboring Uzbekistan, this is a hot-blooded, fast, thin-skinned horse that is not considered a good meat horse. Although developed from desert breeds such as the Persian Arabian and the Turkmenian, they can thrive in "taboons". They have the most unusual colors of Kazahk horse breeds, including spotting identical to an American Appaloosa.
The Kushum
Back when Kazakhstan was part of the Soviet Union, Russia decided to create the best all-purpose breed for the steppes. Beginning in 1931, the little Kazakhs were put to large, flashy Russian Dons, to Russian trotting breeds and to Thoroughbreds. Although the Kushum is not considered as attractive as a Kustanai, they are a lot tougher and have a very high fertility rate. They are one of the most popular breeds in Kazakhstan.
