Murders of or by foreigners in Egypt – Thankfully these cases are rare, but unfortunately they aren’t unheard of. Not the most common of foreigner crimes in Egypt, murder (or a killing) can be classified as follows: self-defence, manslaughter, deliberate murder. In terms of statistics, self-defence is usually behind a foreigner killing an Egyptian citizen.
Let’s talk about serious (criminal) crimes in Egypt, and on an unrelated note let’s look at divorce and what to do in any situation where you know you’ll be dealing with law in Egypt.

Not the most common of foreigner crimes in Egypt, murder (or a killing) can be classified as follows: self-defence, manslaughter, deliberate murder. In terms of statistics, self-defence is usually behind a foreigner killing an Egyptian citizen. However, a knowledgeable criminal lawyer in Egypt should be present to help you give precise explanations in the police station and in court. When a foreigner is murdered in Egypt, don’t hesitate to contact an Egyptian law firm, because locals can ‘take matters in their own hands’, that is, bribe the court or police to win the case.
Divorce from an Egyptian citizen – it takes a long time. Just like the marriage between a foreigner and a citizen of Egypt, the divorce is complicated as well. It can take up to half a year to hand in and validate the correct documents in foreign embassies and Egyptian ministries. Foreign women are usually the ones seeking divorce from an Egyptian husband. In many cases, she has already fled Egypt and wants a remote divorce. However, in some cases the husband prohibits her from leaving. It’s important to contact a law firm in Egypt for translation, support, legal counseling and general help with leaving the country.
What to do if you’ve been caught in a rut in Egypt
In any case of those we’ve discussed in this series, do the following:
1. A thing that doesn’t seem to be important can suddenly grow big if you don’t solve it quickly. There can be thousands of motives that spark the crime–it’s not your fault and you need to calm down.
2. Call a law firm right away (no forums, no emails--time is of utmost importance). Only contact an authorized lawyer, from a reputable company. The law in Egypt is not only complex enough for only professionals to be able to handle it; it’s also an area in which fraud is common. Instead of being helped, you may fall victim to another crime.
3. If possible, photograph the parties involved in the crime. If possible, ask for an ID (be polite).
4. Call the lawyer and wait for the lawyer to arrive. Wait at the spot. Don’t allow for him/her to handle the situation before you’ve checked his certificates. Follow the plan of action the lawyer suggests.
If you follow this plan, you will be legally protected by a professional. It’s quite possible you’ll receive a hefty sum of monetary compensation if you’re the victim.
