Life events were assessed using a series of questions about the occurrence of particular events in the past year before follow up. All respondents were asked if they had experienced each of eight different life events: serious illness or accident of spouse or partner, death of close relative or friend, separated from close friend or relative to whom the respondent depend on for help, loss of pet, loss of a hobby, serious financial trouble, moving home, and had other important event, either good or bad. These items were selected based on previous study on stressful life events among Hong Kong elderly (Chou and Chi, 2000) as these events had stronger psychological impact on Chinese elderly.
