One of the important factors for developing a successful Solid-State Fermentation (SSF) is the use of an appropriate substrate. Selection of a suitable substrate is usually related to its cost and availability, thereby favouring the use of a number of agro-industrial wastes. In this study, substrates were selected based on their availability as well as reports of their use in previous studies. The results showed that enzyme production varied with different substrates. This is mainly because an organism reacts differently to different substrates due to varying rates at which nutrients are used from each.
