The presence of these particles is thought to be a result of the static loading where the pressure is applied initially before the rotation is started. The length of the wear tracks shown in Fig. 8c, is at least 50 mm. Both the V and Cr carbides are considered too small to stop a sliding abrasive particle as their size is limited to 2–4 mm. Fig. 8d shows a cross section of a worn sample from the CT test. Here small grooves are observed indicating that increasing contact pressure leads to microcutting of the PM steel.
