The choice of assets as indicators for the different capitals is limited by the scope of our data, which was not collected for the purpose of the present paper.1 The assets should therefore only be seen as examples of indicators of each capital. A general definition of each capital is accounted for in Table I. The assets used as indicators for each capital used in this assessment are presented in Table II. If vulnerability is defined as the inability of an individual or group to mobilize and
transfer assets in the face of changing conditions, an assessment of the assets that a particular individual or group possess at any given time will provide a first indication of vulnerability. In our illustrative case, data from 2002 were used to indicate the value of each capital asset.Amore detailed account of the assets chosen as indicators for each capital is available in Appendix
