It was a trap, made by the hand of man. The post in the centre was nine feet high with a point at the top; it was blackened with the old blood of animals that had fallen on it. The flesh at the bottom was all that was left from victims. Challenger had said that was difficult to understand how man could deal with the beasts in this country. But now it was clear enough. Their caves had namow entrances so that the enormous andmals could not enter and their deveioped brains could think of setting traps bke this across the paths where the animals run.
