In this study, four selection factors i.e. distance from roads, land
cover, distance from rivers and population density are considered
for the analysis. However, different researchers such as Lai et al. [2]
had chosen population density, building loss after catching fire and
road distance to nearest fire station as selection criteria for preparation of the layout of fire stations within Beijing 3rd ring road by
combining GIS and AHP together; Habibi et al. [11] had chosen
population density, accessibility, distance to high risk areas and size
of plots as selection factors for fire station location the zone 6 of
Tehran, Iran; Erden and Cos¸kun [12] had chosen population density,
proximity to main roads, distance from existing fire stations, distance from hazardous material facilities, wooden building density,
distance from area subjected to earthquake risks as selection factors to ensure optimal site location(s) for fire stations in Istanbul,
Turkey. Hence, more factors can be considered for further study on
the basis of availability of data and information in Kathmandu
Metropolitan City.
Although various plans are prepared for urban development of
Kathmandu Metropolitan City, urban areas continue to grow
haphazardly and without appropriate planning and infrastructure
such as fire station facilities and emergency services. The fire station suitability zonation map presented in this study can be a good
source for concerned authorities and provide valuable information
for development works related to fire station management. A
similar model can be replicated for fire related planning to the
other cities of Nepal.
