Companies that do not employ enough local Professionals, Managers and Executives should be given a limit to the number of foreigners they can hire, said Patrick Tay, Member of Parliament (MP) for West Coast GRC.
In his parliament speech on Thursday (January 28) , Tay also suggested that stricter rules should be carried out on companies when applying employment passes for foreign PMEs, reported The Straits Times.
Local PMEs ought to be retrenched last when a firm decides to streamline its workforce, said Tay in the report.
These methods are part of an effort to overcome the biasness in nationality within the workplace which is still prominent in the IT and financial industries, and to encourage firms to hire Singaporeans over foreigners, he said.
