HUEYTOWN, Alabama -- Should boys be allowed to wear earrings in school?
The Jefferson County board of education has told Hueytown High junior Hunter Mahaffey the answer is no. The Southern Poverty Law Center has told the board in a letter the answer should be yes.
The SPLC told the school board it must repeal what the center calls an "archaic policy" banning male students from wearing earrings, or face a potential lawsuit.
But some of our commenters say both the SPLC and Jefferson County administrators have bigger problems to worry about. See their comments below and add yours.

"I never thought I would see the day when a storied institution like the SPLC was rendered completely irrelevent.
From the champion of the Civil Rights Movement to arguing about boys earrings. They must be desparate for attention. My how the mighty have fallen."

"The kid has a right to wear an earing if he pleases..... why would a school district say its ok for for a girl to and not a boy?...... its very common these days.... I remember when I was in school, boys were not allowed to wear shorts to school, but girls were allowed to wear mini skirts (80's), so in protest the entire boys senior class wore mini skirts to school."

"The SPLC needs a crash course on anti-bullying, as their methods of intimidation are among the worst."
