Ernie Clermont, a lifelong entrepreneur, takes the credit for introducing the green garbage bag to Canada. During the 1960s he ordered large-diameter, extruded film polyethylene, made from recycled material (which gave the green colour) but in a ml thickness, rather than the conventional 5 ml. This cut his costs and permitted him to sell in packages of 10 bags for 99 cents to convenience stores such as Mac’ s Milk in Ontario. He test marketed his product simply by making up a few hundred 10-pack sets in his kitchen and selling them to local convenience stores. When these caught on with the public he went into the business full time.
