Finally, there is disagreement on whether the term ‘labelling’ is considered a surrogate or related term for stigma.
For example, Link & Phelan (2001) have argued that in
contrast to stigma, labelling has both positive and negative
aspects. Labelling may provide categorization for the individual’s
problems and, thus, help professionals provide the
needed care based on that category and help the public to
give special concern to individuals under certain categorical
labels. Conversely, labelling may make labelled individuals
more vulnerable by evoking public discriminatory
responses against them. In this analysis, we suggest ‘negative
labelling’ as a related term for stigma.
