Instructional patterns in the centers were identical whether Alphonso and Marta were there together or whether either of them was absent, replaced by a temporary female assistant teacher. Similarly, both teachers helped with each clean-up time, reminding children of what was expected, modeling and complimenting. Circle time patterns were always the same, although their personality differences were readily apparent, keeping the children interested and involved. Marta was more likely to slip in an extra content lesson when Alphonso was not present. Alfonzo's role was formally less focused on academics and more on support than was Marta's, but the difference was only a matter of degree. Both actively looked for opportunities to teach.
