We have said that scenarios are different from forecasts, prognoses and visions. Scenarios are vivid descriptions of plausible futures. Figure 2.2 illustrates the differences between the three main categories of futures. In general, the further ahead we look, the greater the possibilities. From a personal point of view for instance, I do not have that many options within a one-week time frame. The number of possible ‘one-week futures’ is limited. But if I look five, ten or even more years ahead the number of alternatives is much greater. Some of the possible futures seem today more probable than others. Others are preferable, more desirable, and the desired futures could often differ from the most probable ones. The most desired future, my own vision of how I would like to live my life, might not even fall within the field of ‘possible’ futures.
