Journalists should work to understand and represent the true diversity of the community they are covering. They should recognize their own cultural biases and work hard to move past them when reporting the news, interviewing sources or analyzing a story’s worth. Journalists should present a range of facts, opinions and sources in their work as a whole and avoid all manner of stereotyping, including visual stereotyping. As stated in the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics, it is the journalist’s job to “give voice to the voiceless,” and to “tell the story of the diversity and magnitude of the human experience boldly, even when it is unpopular to do so.”
