So, experiencing depression does not seem to reduce the public׳s psycho-social understanding of depression. It remains possible, however, that interacting with medical professionals and receiving a treatment explicitly based on a bio-medical causal model, might affect one׳s causal beliefs. This would be important because these beliefs have been shown to be related to the relationship with the prescribing doctor, including the potential of that relationship to shape ideas about depression and about appropriate treatments (Karp, 1993, Schofield et al., 2011 and Turner et al., 2008).
