Boris Yeltsin died of congestive heart failure[63][64] on 23 April 2007 at the age of 76.[65][66] According to experts quoted by Komsomolskaya Pravda, the onset of Yeltsin's condition was due to his visit to Jordan between 25 March and 2 April.[63] He was buried in the Novodevichy Cemetery on 25 April 2007,[67] following a period during which his body had lain in state in the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow.[68]
Yeltsin was the first Russian head of state in 113 years to be buried in a church ceremony, after Emperor Alexander III. [69]
President Putin declared the day of his funeral a national day of mourning, with the nation's flags flown at half mast and all entertainment programs suspended for the day.[70]
Yeltsin is survived by his wife, Naina Iosifovna Yeltsina, whom he married in 1956, and their two daughters Yelena and Tatyana, born in 1957 and 1959, respectively.
