The Peranakan culture in Singapore had gone through a period of assimilation,
extravagance, obsolescence and revival since the eighteenth century. The descendents
of the Peranakans consist of the early Diaspora communities who were mostly wealthy
merchants and traders from South East Asia. They married brides from local natives
and adopted their customs, language (Baba1
Malay with a mixture of Chinese dialects),
lifestyle and absorbed elements of European culture during the colonial times. This
eclectic mix creates a unique hybrid culture that is manifested in the Peranakans’
material artifacts, such as porcelain, furniture, silver, jewellery, beadwork, embroidery
and other domestic objects in the Peranakan homes
