Conventional Treatment and Its
Limitations
Conventional treatment for insomnia
can be broadly divided into psychological
treatment and pharmacological treatment.
Psychological Treatment
Psychological or behavioral interventions
seek to change habits and beliefs presumed
to maintain insomnia. Psychological
treatment includes: (1) stimulus control
therapy; (2) sleep restriction therapy; and (3)
sleep hygiene education. Most specialists advocate
a multi-dimensional approach, although
pharmacological treatment using hypnotic
agents usually predominates.
