In fact, pilgrimage is simply form of ritual. Thus it provides anti-structure; pilgrims lose their normal social inhibitions and sense of inequality as they share their enthusiasm for the journey to the sacred place.
We can call Turner’s approach “symbolic anthropology” because he was interested in the meaning behind activities such as rituals. For instance, the rite of passage might include various objects symbolic of adulthood.
