The Hyperspectral Infrared Imager (HyspIRI) mission is proposed to be the first satellite system with the capability
to provide global, repeat coverage across the visible and shortwave infrared spectrum, as well as eight channels
in the midwave and thermal infrared. HyspIRI has stated objectives to address a host of pressing earth
science questions, from radiation budgets to ecosystem functions. A sizable science community has grown to
support the mission, and their ongoing research demonstrates HyspIRI's potential to greatly expand our knowledge
of the earth system. This special issue features a collection of papers, some reviews and others novel science,
that cover the wide array of topics relevant to HyspIRI's mission and reaffirm the necessity for HyspIRI.
