In this experiment, all mice received S. suis through the oral
route. In the healthy mice that received S. suis alone, very little
S. suis was detected in the blood, and none was detected in the
brain. In contrast, the healthy mice that received S. suis plus
ethanol (the acute alcoholism group) had a high ratio and a high
