CAN MONEY BUY HAPPINESS?
Most of us have heard the phrase, “There are some things money can’t buy.” When we hear this, we think of things like love, friendship, and happiness, right? Well, one recent study in the U.S. shows that money CAN buy happiness! Do you believe it?
Scientists looked at two aspects of happiness, or well being. The first is life evaluation, or how we feel about our life when we think about it. And when scientists compared life evaluation with income levels (or the amount of money people make), they found that the more money people make, the better they think their life is.
The second happiness type is emotional well-being, which is basically how we feel on a day to day basis, you know, stress, joy, anger, sadness, excitement. What scientists found was that, just like with life evaluation, emotional well-being got higher the more money people made, but only up until a yearly income of $75,000. Any more money than that had no effect on a person’s emotional well being.
So, if we believe the results of this study, we can say that money can buy happiness, but only up to a certain point. In my opinion, once you have the basic necessities of life, like food, water, shelter, education, and medicine, that happiness is simply a state of mind, and a balanced way of living. I think if we remain aware of how lucky we are to have what we DO have, we can keep working toward our goals without envy for those now have more. So there is no need to become rich to be happy!
