marine environment.Severalcommercial fish oilsandmarineoils,rangingintotalarsenicconcentrations
from 1.6to12.5mgkg1 oil, wereanalyzedforarsenolipidsusingreversed-phasehighperformance
liquidchromatographycoupledwithinductivelycoupledplasmamassspectrometry(HPLC–ICP-MS).The
arsenolipids werequantified usingthreedifferentarsenic-containingcalibrationstandards;dimethy-
larsinate (DMA),triphenylarsinoxide(Ph3AsO) andasynthesizedarsenic-containinghydrocarbon(AsHC)
(dimethylarsinoylnonadecane;C21H43AsO). Theobservedvariationinsignalintensityforarsenicduring
the gradientelutionprofile inreversed-phaseHPLCwascompensatedforbydeterminingthetime-
resolvedresponsefactorsforthearsenolipids.Isotopesofgermanium(74Ge) andindium(115In) were
suited asinternalstandardsforarsenic,andwereusedforverification ofthearsenicsignalresponse
factors duringthegradientelution.Dimethylarsinatewasthemostsuitablecalibrationstandardforthe
quantification ofarsenolipids,withrecoveriesbetween91%and104%comparedtototalarsenic
measurements inthesameextracts.Arangeofmarineoilswasinvestigated,includingoilsofseveral
fish species,codliverandseal,aswellasthreecommercial fish oils.TheAsHCs – C17H38AsO, C19H42AsO
and C23H38AsO – wereidentified asthemajorarsenolipidsintheextractsofalloilsbyHPLCcoupledwith
quadrupoletime-of-flight massspectrometry(qTOF-MS).Minoramountsoftwoarsenic-containingfatty
acids (AsFAs)(C23H38AsO3 and C24H38AsO3) werealsodetectedintheoils.ThesumoftheAsHCsandthe
AsFAsdeterminedinthepresentstudyaccountedfor17–42% ofthetotalarsenicintheoils.
