The bottom two rows of the figure illustrate the effect of spoils on MID and VIC
initiation. The split samples reveal important differences in state behavior. Coup
risk has no influence on conflict initiation (MID or VIC) at lower levels of spoils
in democracies (M15, M17), but gains significance with an increasingly positive
effect on conflict behavior at higher levels. Increasing spoils from the 20th to
80th percentile increases MID initiation by 706 percent in democracies (.0014
to .015).
