According to Kreitner and Luthans (1975), if an employee self-managed
themeself to a degree, then their manager could actually have more time to focus on main
business issues. Such actions could result in better time management and overall performance (Manz & Neck, 2007). The concept of self-management became an
important attribute to pay attention to, since all individuals engage in types of selfcontrolling
behaviors (Mahoney & Thoresen, 1974, p. 45). It would be helpful for leaders
and followers to focus on building skills that are most effective to their roles and
minimize behaviors that impede their effectiveness (Manz & Neck, 2007).
