Data Analysis
Data were processed through qualitative and quantitative analysis. The students’
interests, attitudes, reading preferences, and their familiarity with graphic novels were analyzed
through the pre-test survey. These data were observed through both qualitative and quantitative
analysis. The frequency of similar answers for each question were calculated for quantitative
analysis, while the answers themselves were viewed qualitatively for investigation of student
preferences reading interests.
The post-test survey’s data were analyzed to determine the students’ attitudes and
interests regarding graphic novels. It was used both as a qualitative and a quantitative measure,
for viewing the frequency of answers and the category of answers themselves. This data were
primarily be analyzed for differences as compared to the pre-survey. This was viewed
specifically for changes in the students’ interests and preferences of reading graphic novels.
The detailed follow up interview were analyzed qualitatively. The students’ responses
were gauged to reveal specific characteristics of graphic novels that appeal to male and female
students to differing degrees.
The assessment inventory the students completed regarding the graphic novels were used
mainly to assess specific qualitative features students indicate a preference for regarding graphic
novels. This documentation provided the researcher with specific characteristics students found
appealing and specific characteristics students disliked. This was also analyzed in comparison to
the pre-an- post-surveys to document similarities between the three measures.
