1. Introduction
Several lead compounds have shown carcinogenic
potential in animal experiments. Lead acetate
and lead subacetate has caused kidney and
brain tumours, and lead phosphate kidney tumours
in rodents ŽZollinger, 1953; Tanner and
Lipsky, 1984; Kasprzak et al., 1985; Koller et al.,
1985; Nogueira, 1987.. In 1987, the International
Agency for Research on Cancer ŽIARC, 1987.
concluded that there was sufficient evidence for
carcinogenicity to animals, and that inorganic lead
was possibly carcinogenic to humans Žgroup 2B..
Recently published epidemiological studies
from Italy ŽCocco et al., 1997., Finland ŽAnttila et
al., 1995. and Sweden ŽGerhardsson et al., 1995.
report on the possible carcinogenicity of lead. It
is well known that many lead workers, particularly
those employed in smelting operations are exposed
to a complex mixture of dust, fumes, gases
and other metals in addition to lead. An increased
risk of lung cancer has been reported
from a primary copper and lead smelter in northern
Sweden ŽLundstr¨om et al., 1997., where there
was concomitant exposure to lead and other carcinogenic
substances, e.g. arsenic.
The aim of the present study was to update
data and further analyze the risk of lung cancer
and other malignancies in two subcohorts of the
most lead exposed workers at this smelter.
