The presence of high level of total suspended solids and total dissolved solids is due to organic and inorganic matter present in the effluent. A large number of solids are found dissolved in natural waters, the common ones are carbonate, bicarbonates, chlorides, sulfates, phosphates and nitrates of calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, iron, magnesium etc. A high content of TDS reduces the utility of water for drinking, irrigation and industrial purposes.
