The higher water soluble carbohydrate values in PMamended soils than in CGCC-amended soils can contribute to a
higher concentration of labile organic substances than recalcitrant ones. According to Van Veen et al. (1985), soils
with a lower input of labile organic matter from the plant cover do not show high potential microbial activity because the labile organic matter fractions express the ecosystem’s potential to support an energy load sufficient for microbial activity.
