THE SUSTAINABILITY CHALLENGE
Traditionally, sustainability has been viewed as one aspect of corporate social responsibility
related to the impact of the business on the environment. 23 However, we take
a broader view of sustainability. Sustainability refers to a company’s ability to make a
profit without sacrificing the resources of its employees, the community, or the environment.
24 Company success is based on how well the company meets the needs of its
stakeholders. Stakeholders refers to shareholders, the community, customers, employees,
and all of the other parties that have an interest in seeing that the company succeeds.
