The concepts just illustrated can be extended to other nonaqueous solvents. For example, in liquid
N 2 O 4 if autoionization occurred it would produce NO and NO 3 . In this solvent, a compound that
furnishes NO 3 would be a base, and a compound that would (formally rather than actually) produce
NO would be an acid. Therefore, the reaction of KNO 3 with NOCl (actually linked as ONCl) is a
neutralization in liquid N 2 O 4 .
