Many of these children live in
community conditions that have adversely
impacted their readiness for school. Some of these
conditions include: the family’s loss of meaningful
employment, the infestation of illegal drugs, and an
increase in single-parent households. In addition,
the number of children being reared by
grandparents has increased. There are also leagues
of other children who have lived in multiple foster
care facilities, and still others who have been
simply left to rear themselves.
