Special fault-tolerant computers are designed with several redundant hardware modules and alternate paths so that they can function without causing damage. However, their performance level is reduced after a fault, compared to the normal level. This is known as the 'graceful degradation' since the fault-tolerant computer works correctly (but with reduced efficiency) even after a failure Tandem's computers are excellent examples of the fault-tolerant computers.
