In my view, I think the Swiss don’t splurge because they embrace the concept of “sufficiency.” Once they reach the point where they are content with whatever they take, they are able to stop. They are not greedy and do not want to take more than necessary. We all know by heart that the most important of all philosophies introduced by the King is “sufficient economy.” I don’t need to say more, but I’d like to quote his speech; “Enough means sufficient. When we have sufficient necessity to take care of our needs, then we shall be able to say ‘enough.’ So if we are content in having just enough for what we need, we will not be greedy, which means that we will not over-consume and the resources can be shared with others more efficiently. If every country behaves like this, its people will all be content. Sufficiency can be abundant, and extravagant, as long as one does not deprive the resources from others. Sufficiency is applied to the way we talk, we do, we behave….”
