‘The Walking Dead’ returned to our screens this week with what can only be described as an incredible premiere episode and it’s one that set everyone up for the season ahead.
While we won’t spoil what happened – we know (somehow) that there are people out there who haven’t seen it yet, you can read our full spoilers right here but be warned, spoilers are ahead..
The season five premiere episode of ‘The Walking Dead’ featured “THEN” flashbacks during our time in the Terminus which looked back at the past of Gareth (Andrew J. West) who appeared to now be the head Termite. They also showed his mother Mary and his brother Alex.
Andrew J. West caught up with Entertainment Weekly recently and was asked what it felt like to film those scenes, which gave fans the opportunity to fill in the blanks about his character, who up until now had been quite mysterious.
West explained that it was “hugely helpful” for him explaining “back at the end of Season 4 in the finale, I knew very little about the character.”
He added that when he got the job, because security on the show is so tight he didn’t even know his character’s name: ” So, getting to read this first script and getting to jump in and shoot these flashbacks was hugely helpful because it gave me a little bit of backstory.”
The actor went on to explain that it gave him an understanding of where he’s coming from, how complicated he really is and how he’s came to this way of living and he added that “those were kind of terrifying scenes to shoot” – but they really helped us as the viewer, right?
“The actor that they hired who throws my mother into the train car and who hits me in the face and stuff was just fantastic and just terrifying,” though despite internet theories, that wasn’t Negan who comic book fans are hoping to see debut soon.
When the premiere episode wrapped up it was unclear whether or not we would see Gareth again, he was shot by Rick but it’s unlikely to have been fatal so there’s every opportunity he will return, perhaps at the Church which was featured in the preview for episode two.
Speaking about the Church, we know that in the instalment titled ‘Strangers’ we’re going to meet Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam) for the first time and showrunner Scott Gimple spoke to Entertainment Weekly about just how close the character will mimic that of the comic books.
“Very much from the comic book, not at all from the comic book.” Gimple explained. “I don’t think people can set their watches to it and be like, ‘Oh yeah, it’s totally going to be the same story.’ It’s not.”
If you haven’t read the books, Gabriel feels guilty because he closed his doors to his congregation when the outbreak first began so he could save himself, leaving them to die.
Episode two airs this Sunday 19th October in the US and the night after in the UK.
