Both the 1993 and 1995 surveys obtained detailed information on HR policies and practices. Bivariate chi-square tests were used to ascertain whether any of the HR practices examined are more
widely reported in one industry than in the other. Establishments with fewer than 25 employees,
within which formal HRM procedures were unlikely to have much of a role to play, were dropped
from the analysis. This resulted in eight manufacturing industry establishments being dropped
from the analysis, yielding a subsample of 314 establishments, and two hotels being dropped,
giving a subsample of 230 establishments.
