Silver Shipwreck
On August 2, 2013, a company called Odyssey Marine Exploration removed over 50,000 kilograms (120,000 pounds) of silver from a shipwreck off the coast of Ireland-the heaviest amount of the metal ever taken from a shipwreck. The ship, the S.S. Gairsoppa, was carrying tea, iron, and silver from the distant lands of India, when it sank in 1941. Today, that much silver is worth almost $75 million. In addition to the silver, the company also found some newspapers and letters written by the sailors.
