Mathnet episodes on Square One TV are also excellent vehicles for making connections between solving mystery stories and solving mathematics problems. In particular, we have used"The Case of the Missing Baseball" to develop the skills of critical viewing and listening. Such episodes capture students' interest and generate excitement as they predict what will happen in subsequent segments of the episode. We supply students with a"Mathnet Casebook" in which they keep their notes as the case unfolds. Students work in small groups to discuss the actions taken by the Mathnet detectives, George Frankly and Kate Monday. They identify the tools and techniques used in each episodes(e.g., drawing a diagram, making a table or graph, using objects, or acting it out), they write their hypotheses based on the facts(e.g., "I think the baseball rolled into Mrs. McGregor's house"), they identify actions taken by the Mathnet helpers(e.g., identifying the problem, reviewing the facts, gathering information, making an estimate), and they record the results of the investigation(e.g., "Once the Mathnetters found Mrs. McGregor's house, they were able to find the baseball").
