Method
A PEG-NCP {Box 2) was devised to help nurses look
after stroke patients with PEG tubes in situ. The aim
was to standardise the nursing care of PEG tubes,
which included monitoring for PEG-related infections
on a daily basis and ensuring that the tube was rotated
according to recommended guidelines. The nursing
team developed a training pack and competency
checklist to ensure that all nurses could be equipped
with the necessary skills to competently manage PEG
tubes in stroke patients. The PEG-NCP was implemented
in August 2012. A second audit was carried
out to identify actual and potential infections arising
after its implementation.
