Wat Yang Kuang or Wat Yaan Kuong is also located south of the old city of Chiang Mai. It is said that the name Yaan Kuong or Naang Rua is the ancient word of the Lanna Kingdom for fence or wall. Built as a defence line or not, this temple's history goes back a long time. It was deserted about 200 years ago. Donations are collected at this point to built new temple buildings. A big Buddha head was found here, called Phra San Sae, which was taken to the museum in Chiang Mai. The Buddha head seen at this temple is actually a replica. A large Buddha image is seated behind the Buddha head and to the side stands a ancient chedi.
