Staw (1980) distinguishes two types of rationalisation, retrospective and prospective: ‘the individual seeks to appear competent in previous as opposed to future actions’, and the behaviour models based on the subjective expected utility theory examine the principle of prospective rationality. The combination of these two rationalisation factors brings an added difficulty to the understanding of decision-making processes. Staw (1981) highlights four factors
