Botswana Ecotourism Standards
The Draft Ecotourism Standards have been revised according to the direct
feedback of the tourism industry and the Project Steering Committee. The
Standards are presented here as they would be available to the operator
applying for certification, i.e. in the form of the Self-Assessment process. This
document is very similar to the form used by the field evaluator and details all of
the standards, defining which are compulsory for each various tier in the system,
how many marks are awarded for each standard and how the standard is
evaluated in the field. The process has been purposefully made to be clear and
transparent to ensure that all of the information is available to the applicant.
The following tables are provided only as reference material. They do not reflect
the actual layout of the self-assessment and field evaluation form. Both of these
forms have been provided as separate pdf files.
The following standards are presented within this document only to provide
continuity for the reader. Please refer to the separate pdf files for an actual
representation of the forms.
The standards are also presented in generic form, i.e. they are applicable to all
categories and grades of tourism accommodation and licensed operation. The
final standards will however be category and/or licence specific. The standards
will be applied to all current categories of accommodation as defined by the
BOBS standards. The categories currently utilized by the Department of Tourism,
as defined by Botswana Bureau of Standards (BOS 50-3:2001) are as follows
