Although no specific high-speed freight railway has been constructed, the highspeed
rail passenger service releases much capacity for freight traffic (High-speed
vs airline, changes of a time on transportation 2009). Apart from the Shen-Qin
special passenger railway, almost all other railways in China serve both passengers
and freight. However, from the experiences of US, Japanese or European countries,
it is better to separate the freight and passenger traffic (Rong and Bouf 2005).
High-speed railways will increase the current capacity for passengers. This may
help to release some rail service to be used only for freight. As a result, the
capacity, speed, and safety of cargo transportation will be improved (Li and Qi
2007)
