Opportunity One of the McDonald’s Australia Environmental
Department’s key objectives in 2011 was to obtain certification with
the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) and design and build a
scalable, Green-Star-rated McDonald’s restaurant.
Solution McDonald’s Australia partnered with the GBCA with
the aim of becoming an industry leader as the first quick-service
restaurant (QSR) in Australia to develop and build an accredited,
4-star Green Building. This project has enabled McDonald’s Australia
to consolidate and incorporate a number of worthwhile sustainability
initiatives into building standards.
Results McDonald’s Australia’s first green restaurant is in the
Victorian suburb of Kilsyth near Melbourne. The design and
construction of the restaurant was a first for the QSR industry in
Australia. The restaurant features innovative heating, ventilation
and air conditioning (HVAC) design, rainwater harvesting, recycled
building materials and solar panels. Several of these designs have
now become standard for new restaurants, including high-efficiency
HVAC design, rainwater harvesting and LED lightin
