Mass wasting
through creep and slumping was observed in the sidewall areas following
below-freezing temperatures, which agrees with results of Archibold et al.
(2003), and also when precipitation was sufficient to saturate the top
layer of soil, and when channel flow was sufficient to undercut the sidewalls.
Previous research on soil profiles in the study area revealed a shallow,
low hydraulic conductivity B-horizon that encouraged piping and
subsurface flow and may have contributed to slumping in the sidewall
areas
