Learning and teaching grammar is one of the central issues in the foreign language
classroom. In the last decade there have been many discussions on this topic, especially
concerning alternative approaches to convey grammar knowledge and usage. This article
discusses the “receptive grammar” approach, which has not been a major focus of research,
although it was initially recognized as an element of the communication language teaching
method in the 1970s. “Receptive Grammar” for German as a Foreign Language will be
demonstrated using the most current textbook examples. In addition, it will be shown how this
approach can be adapted for use in reading courses to raise language and grammar awareness.
