4. Oil extraction
The C. vulgaris is pre-dried up to 85 wt.% DW before being processed.
This DW is comparable to the solid content of, e.g. soybeans.
According to literature (Sazdanoff, 2006), the processing
yields and required facilities for the microalgal oil are similar to
those for the oil of soybeans. This means that 95% of the oil can
be extracted using an electricity consumption of 0.24 MJ, a heat
consumption of 0.76 MJ, and a hexane loss of 2.4 g per kilogram
of dry C. vulgaris (Sheehan et al., 1998a,b).
